Robert Downey Jr and Jon Favreau have revealed that filming Iron Man 3 in the wake of The Avengers may present a number of difficulties, especially in terms of the storyline.

The Cowboys & Aliens director was joined by Downey Jr at the Hero Complex Film Festival in Hollywood on Sunday for a screening of the first two Iron Man movies. According to Slash Film, the two spoke about the future of the Iron Man franchise, focusing on how the release of The Avengers will affect Iron Man 3.

“I guess in comics you can say that it’s an individual storyline and you can break it off into a group,” said Favreau. “But in movies, it’s hard not to take into consideration what just happened. What are you gonna say? ‘They all just lost their cell phones and you can’t get help?’ So it’s going to take a lot of ingenuity to make it make sense to a mainstream film audience as well as a comic book audience.”

Favreau, who directed the first two Iron Man movies, left the franchise to make Magic Kingdom. He will be replaced by Shane Black for the third instalment.

Downey Jr went on to state that Favreau will still help with the storyline for Iron Man 3.

“There’s going to be this kind of conglomerate of efforts,” Downey Jr said.

The Sherlock Holmes star also opened up about shooting The Avengers, revealing his enthusiasm for the ensemble cast.

“I just thought, ‘How are you gonna put all of us clowns together? He’s wearing a suit, he’s all jacked up, he’s so and so and poor Mark Ruffalo, he’s gonna out do us’. And we’re about six weeks in and I have to say Joss Whedon is nailing it,” Downey Jr said. “He’s so smart and so good. And it’s gonna be great. I can’t believe I just said it, I never could’ve believed this but it’s gonna be great.”

The Avengers is scheduled to open in cinemas on May 4, 2012.

There’s a new article about Iron Man 3‘s new director, Shane Black and where the third part of the franchise might be headed:

Black pointed out that the studio was not pleased with the direction of Iron Man 2 and that the third film will not be “two men in iron suits fighting each other,” but, instead, would play more like a Tom Clancy thriller, with Iron Man’s opponents being more real-world than comic book.

Reportedly the film will not feature other Marvel heroes, because the plan is that post-Avengers the various films will focus on individual heroes, and that the crossovers were designed primarily as a lead in to that Joss Whedon-directed film.”

Take this with a grain of salt since it’s not a direct quote from Black, but it seems legit. Personally, I think it’s pretty awesome that they’re going back to the formula that made the first film so special.

Thanks to tonypepper @ LJ for the heads up.

I’ve also added HQ images of Gywneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr at the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party. Jude Law, Susan Downey and other are also present.

You can see Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow reunited at the Vanity Fair Oscar After Party in the following video. It’s in the first 33 seconds or so. Robert’s wife Susan and Jude Law are also there.

I’m trying to find HQ pics of them here, so keep an eye out for that.

Gwyneth also spoke about Iron Man 3’s possible new director, Shane Black at the red carpet, here’s what she had to say:

“I haven’t met [Shane Black] yet, no,” Paltrow told MTV News.

“[Black is a] great writer,” she continued. “I’ll really miss Jon Favreau, but I’m sure Shane will be great.”

Finally, there’s some new wallpapers and drawings at The Workshop.

Jon Favreau won’t direct Iron Man 3
Dec 16th, 2010

Jon Favreau is not directing Iron Man 3. Favreau reportedly made the decision last week, but it is unsure if his decision was financial, creative or both. Other reports state that Favreau was frustrated with Marvel wanting to include more and more of their characters into the Iron Man series. It is also said that Favreau may have simply been too expensive for Marvel at this point. Favreau made a reported $10 million for Iron Man 2, and with rumors that Disney was looking to cut costs, some have theorized that Disney may have been pushing a confusing and packed vision of the third film as a tactic to provoke Favreau into leaving the project.

Marvel began quietly searching for a new director as of last night, and it should be noted that Robert Downey Jr. has contractual approval over the director of the film. Favreau is still working on two projects for Disney, which are Magic Kingdom and finishing up Cowboys & Aliens.

It has also been confirmed by Jon himself via twitter.

So sad to see him go. He was such an integral part of the Iron Man family and will be missed by all of us.

Hopefully the new director will be as much of shipper as Favs was. Knowing that RDJ has a say on who gets to direct gives me hope, we know he loves Pepper and Tony as much as Jon does.

We’ll be opening the art gallery in the next few days, no time like the present to celebrate our ship.
